HISTORICAL BACKGROUND

The REGIONAL CENTRE FOR TRAINING IN AEROSPACE SURVEYS (RECTAS) Located at the Obafemi Awolowo University (O.A.U) Campus, Ile-Ife, Osun State, Nigeria. was established in 1972 under the auspices of the UN Economic Commission for Africa (UNECA) with a mandate for Training, Research, Consultancy and Advisory Services in Geoinformatics. The Centre is a joint project of African countries, the participating countries at the moment are: Benin, Burkina, Cameroon, Ghana, Mali, Niger, Nigeria and Senegal.

Vision & Mission

The vision of RECTAS is to be a leading Centre of Excellence, providing one-stop solution for quality geospatial science training, education, and research and critical capacity building for sustainable development in Africa & also contribute to rapid sustainable development of member states in particular and Africa in general, through timely delivery and responsible use of appropriate geospatial information.

Objectives

To provide theoretical and practical training in the field of Geoinformatics, including in particular Photogrammetry, Remote Sensing, Cartography, Geographic Information Systems (GIS), and their applications in environmental studies, mapping, natural resources management, disaster management, urban management, climate change, etc.

To conduct seminars, workshops and short term courses with a view to providing an opportunity for dissemination of information in the field of Geoinformatics.

to carry out studies and research in the field of Geoinformatics.

To provide advisory and consultancy services in Geoinformatics and other related areas to the governments of the member states of the Economic Commission for Africa and other institutions.
